Jack has issued his latest policy proposal. It addresses the problem of breaking the cycle of poverty using a comprehensive approach. You can read it here.
Indy Week Articles
There were two articles of interest in the March 19, 2008 Independent Weekly. The first, which you can read here, deals with the controversy over the method of electing Wake County school board members. The article includes a summary of a proposal that Jack has made to address the issue.
The second article is Bob Geary's coverage of the District 16 State Senate race, which you can read here. Especially noteworthy is Geary's analysis of Jack's viewpoint:
In this race, however, and unlike the Democratic presidential campaign, it's the more experienced candidate, Nichols, who emphasizes the need for bipartisan alliances to accomplish anything in Wake County—or for the politically divided Wake County legislative delegation to get anything done in the General Assembly.
The article notes that former Raleigh City Councilor Benson Kirkman, the moderator at a recent candidates' forum, was "scratching his head" trying to decide who to support for District 16. After having the opportunity to compare the candidates side by side, responding to questions about important issues, Kirkman made up his mind. “Jack showed a much greater depth and breadth of understanding of the issues. Personally, I like both candidates, but Jack Nichols has the passion, the savvy and the know-how to help lead Wake County and all of North Carolina in the future,” Kirkman said in endorsing Jack.
In fact, Kirkman and other South West Raleigh neighbors are hosting a meet and greet for Jack on April 6 (details on the Events page).

Jack Nichols Describes Why He Is Running for NC Senate
I'm running for North Carolina Senate District 16, a seat now held by Senator Janet Cowell, who is running for State Treasurer.
Why am I running?
First and foremost, my education and experience will help me serve as a thoughtful senator – one who listens to people and formulates public policy that is fair to all. I want to make Wake County and North Carolina a better place to live and work.
Secondly, our state should face up to some issues that require change and the leadership willing to work for that change.
Improving education, particularly attracting and retaining educators. We must move North Carolina from 23rd place to a higher national ranking.
Improving our environment by supporting and funding programs that promote cleaner air and cleaner water. We must provide tools to help local government manage growth.
Developing an economy that provides jobs and a greater tax base, while also promoting a cleaner environment.
Supporting the Triangle Transit Authority which must get back on track so our Triangle community can thrive as the urban area it has become.
Expanding SmartStart and other programs for pre-school children so they start school ready to learn and so their parents can return to the workplace while their child is in a quality childcare setting.
Providing health care for the medically underserved and uninsured by supporting and expanding programs like SCHIP, Medicaid payments for children's dental care, and other state options.
Treating state employees fairly in their work and their compensation and benefits. As an attorney who has represented state employees in over 100 personnel grievances and court cases, I have seen many examples of state employees being treated unfairly. State government should be a model employer.
Finally, as a Wake County Commissioner I learned that local government needs the ear and the support of legislators. I will work with local elected officials in introducing and supporting bills.
I invite you to join my campaign and my efforts to make Wake County and North Carolina a better place to live and work. You can contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I ask for your help and your vote.
